The Faculty of Science consists of nine schools, with more than 400 staff and 700 researchers. The School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS) has an international reputation in biotechnology, molecular and cellular biology, and microbiology, including proteomics and genomics, gene regulation, metabolism, environmental microbiology and infectious diseases. BABS teaches approximately 2,000 full-time equivalent students, and has 34 academics, 28 postdoctoral research associates or fellows, approximately 20 other research staff, 152 higher degree research students, 12 technical officers and 4 administrative staff. The school’s yearly operational budget is approximately $10M, with available research funds of approximately $9 million annually.

The main aims of the position are to carry out research on disease-associated non-coding regulatory elements and how their function is impacted by genetic variants associated with complex traits.

THIS ROLE IS BASED IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.

About The Role

  • Level A - $113K - $121K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 6 months
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to Associate Professor Irina Voineagu and has no direct reports.

Specific Responsibilities For This Role Include

  • Assist and collaborate in the conduct of research on regulatory genomics in the human brain and brain cancers.
  • Assist in writing scientific reports and papers, coordinating research activities, participating in the setting of research directions and any other research activities as required.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
  • Mentor honours students and junior PhD students.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values
  • Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.

About The Successful Applicant

(Selection Criteria)

To Be Successful In This Role You Will Have

  • Relevant degree, in molecular, cellular biology or neuroscience.
  • Experience with high throughput screening of regulatory elements in brain cells.
  • Experience with organoid models of brain development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
